Product Details

This one-of-a-kind necklace is composed of:

  • Victorian 18k solid gold dress pin with hand-hewn serpents surrounding red garnet stones. Three snakes lined this dress pin and were likely converted from button cuffs sometime in the early 1900s. We've disassembled them once again to be worn as necklaces. This pin was sourced and found in England.

  • This necklace measures a standard 18” on with the pendant measuring .5" in width.

  • ***We are offering the option to customize the necklaces for these pendants: either a solid 14k gold chain OR a modern 14k gold filled chain of the same size. Please select your chain preference in the drop down menu to see price difference. Check out our Gold Guide to learn the difference between metal types.

*3 serpent pendants are available and are sold individually.

THE HISTORY:

When Prince Albert asked for Queen Victoria’s hand in marriage in 1820, he did so with a ring shaped like a snake, set with emeralds. Following this, snake jewelry became all the rage, symbolizing eternal love and wisdom.

The circle has always been a significant symbol representing wholeness and perfection - symbolizing eternal love for centuries - particularly in Christian marriage ceremonies. Snake rings and designs add to the symbolism of the circle, with different significance in several cultures.

In Greek mythology, snake rings were worn in honor of the Greek healing god Asclepius, who Zeus struck down as he feared Asclepius would transform all of mankind into immortals. In Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, snakes were regarded for their skin-shedding as a symbol for regeneration and rebirth. Today, the snake is still the symbol of medicine.
